Director's Statement
This 8-part creative documentary aims at bringing to the surface untold stories that have been buried under the heavy layers of Malta's rich history.
This is a war documentary that dives deep into the lives of outstanding women who have contributed to bringing one of humanity's most dreaded chapters to an end - World War II through dramatic reenactments, exclusive interviews, extensive research and the use of rare (and largely unseen) historical footage, photos and other archival material.
Justin Farrugia
Writer's Statement
Some women stood above the rest, sometimes in Malta or in friendly territories abroad, going well above the call of duty during a time of ecclesial and social misogyny. Other risked their very lives working discreetly in hostile lands, abetting the allies' cause. The Women of George Cross Island attempts to leaven the devastation with hope and despair with courage, as it chronicles personal experiences of how individual women laughed, suffered, grieved, dared and loved.
The contribution of women in this battle directly impacted and led to one of the most seminal moments in Malta’s political history - the acquisition of women’s voting rights in 1947.
