Henrietta Chevalier

This Maltese Woman in 1940 became a widow stuck in Rome under Mussolini's Fascist state with 8 children to care for. She put her life on the line after joining Monsignor Hugh O' Flaherty's "Rome Escape Line" network operating in the Vatican, which is credited with directly offering  assistance to 4,000 Jews and escaped allied prisoners during the war

Carmela 'Meme' turner Nee Cortis

She was on duty in June 1942, when the Nazis bombed the hospital. She was Injured by shrapnel, which pierced her arm. In later years, Meme considered her resulting scar "as good as being decorated"

Mary Ellul

Her physical strength became legendary as she was the one lifting heavy boulders to pull out civilians from under the rubble

Dr. Irene Condachi

"We must not lose the pleasure of learning, and we must always keep our mind alert if we want to keep young and live long." Dr. Irene Condachi was credited of having single-handedly rid of scabies and other diseases from all schools in Malta during WW2

Mabel Strickland

Mabel was an Anglo-Maltese newspaper publisher and politician who was regarded as one of the most powerful women in the Mediterranean Region.

She was bent on keeping the people of Malta properly informed and uplifted. She never missed an issue and in 1944 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her wartime devotion to duty. 

Us women today stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, whose tireless work helped achieve a major milestone in the fight towards gender equality. May we not forget them and may we continue their legacy in raising up those women who come after us.

Aileen 'Mike' Morris

She travelled from Egypt to Malta during the worst of WW2 to provide her expertise in intercepting and decrypting crucial intelligence from the axis forces. 

Mary Miles

Mary was the darling of the British troops, With her singing she entertained them throughout the four years she spent in Malta during the war. For eighteen months during the blitz in Malta, Mary refused to accept any fee, with all her takings going to charity. 

Winifred Cutajar Beck

Winifred Cutajar Beck was determined to become a journalist and fought her family to enable her to do so.  As Mabel's Right-hand woman She could grasp a situation at a glance and write an article at speed.

She became a stringer in Malta for Reuters and was promoted to News editor.

Gemma Chevalier

Gemma, one of Henrietta Chevalier's children, was the most active contributor from her siblings to aid in 'The Rome Escape Line' - and underground operation during WW2 aimed at saving allied prisoners of war and Jews from death camps.
